An Asherah pole is a wooden cultic object — likely a stylized living or carved tree — used in ancient Israelite and broader Canaanite worship, understood by most scholars as a symbol of the goddess Asherah, a consort figure paired with the God of Israel in some strands of pre-exilic religion. The Hebrew Bible describes such poles standing in sanctuaries alongside altars to Baal and even within the Jerusalem Temple itself, until Judahite reformers like Josiah ordered them torn out, ground to dust, and burned. Archaeological finds such as the Kuntillet Ajrud inscriptions and cult stands showing stylized trees flanked by ibexes are commonly cited as material evidence for what these poles may have looked like.
Second Kings describes Josiah’s men hauling an Asherah pole out of the Jerusalem temple, grinding it to dust, and burning the remains in the Kidron Valley — a scene specific enough that most historians treat it as evidence the pole was actually there, whatever they make of the sweeping reform narrative built around it. What the object actually was is less settled: probably a wooden pole or stylized tree standing in for the goddess Asherah, echoed in the stylized date palms and feeding ibexes carved on cult stands and painted on pottery at sites like Kuntillet Ajrud.
Before Josiah’s reforms made the pole disreputable, the biblical text treats Asherah’s presence beside Adonai as unremarkable: the evidence suggests she was worshiped as his consort rather than a rival to be purged until the seventh century BCE. Raanan Eichler pushes past that acceptance: he argues the story of Aaron’s flowering rod, kept beside the Ark of the Covenant, was invented specifically to explain away an actual Asherah pole sitting in the Holy of Holies, folding a once-ordinary cult object into an origin story about priestly authority instead.

“One of the things that you've got in the Books of Kings is a description of Josiah taking an Asherah pole out of the temple, which indicates... the worship of Asherah alongside Adonai, the God of Israel, was taking place in the Jerusalem Temple.”
“This pole could have been a piece of material media that helped facilitate access to the presence of the goddess.”
“We don't get any vilification of the Asherah poles until the 7th century BCE, with Josiah's campaign of cult centralization. Prior to Josiah, it seems like they were worshiping Asherah as the consort, the partner of Adonai, of the God of Israel.”
“They take all that stuff out and they grind it to dust and they burn it in the Valley of Kidron... at least the way the story is told in 2 Kings. The degree to which that's historical, we don't know for sure.”
