Aaron's rod is the wooden staff described in Numbers 17: one of twelve tribal staffs placed before the Ark of the Covenant to settle a dispute over priestly authority, and the only one that sprouted buds, blossoms, and ripe almonds overnight. The same staff reappears in Numbers 20, kept before the Ark and taken up by Moses to strike the rock at Meribah. Some scholars argue the budding-staff story was composed later to explain an existing cult object resembling an Asherah pole among the sacred items kept beside the Ark.

Three items reportedly sat before the Ark of the Covenant: the tablets of the law, a jar of manna, and Aaron’s rod — a staff that, according to Numbers 17, sprouted buds, blossoms, and ripe almonds overnight to settle a dispute over which tribe held priestly authority. Raanan Eichler’s argument that the budding-staff story was invented later to explain away an already-existing Asherah pole kept beside the Ark turns a minor tribal miracle into a test case for whether official Israelite worship was quietly making room for a goddess.
The same staff appears again two chapters later in Numbers 20, where Moses takes the staff from before the LORD — not his own staff, but Aaron’s — to strike the rock at Meribah, the single act that costs him entry into the promised land. Read as an Asherah pole rather than a plain walking stick, that punishment looks sharper: Moses is barred from Canaan for misusing a divine object, while Aaron, who built and led worship of an actual golden calf earlier in the same book, faces no consequence at all. Guest scholar Angela Roskop Erisman reads the same image differently: for her, a flowering staff evoking Isaiah’s shoot from the stump of Jesse signals that the Aaron narratives are doing deliberate royal-messianic work, not just settling a dispute over priestly turf.

2 mentions“There's a scholar named Raanan Eichler who has argued that the story of Aaron's budding rod might be a post hoc rationalization of why there's an Asherah in the Ark of the Covenant.”
“The budding rod is a wonderful mishmash of images... the idea of a wooden rod that sprouts evokes Isaiah 11 and the shoot that shall come from the stump of Jesse. So this is all royal imagery, and it's so beautifully intertextual.”
“It just says the staff... take the staff from before the Lord. It's Aaron's budding rod.”
“It's not Moses's own staff. It's the flowering rod of Aaron, which is supposed to represent the authority that Moses and Aaron have. This is God's sign to the people that this is the person in whom I am placing this authority.”
