Gnosticism is a modern scholarly label for a loose cluster of ancient religious movements that treated the material world as a prison or corruption and salvation as escape through special knowledge. The term is useful but imprecise, because the movements grouped under it did not all share a single system or stable self-designation.

Gnosticism sits near the center of the show’s recurring interest in early Christian diversity, heresiology, and the instability of later religious categories. Discussions gathered here use it to show how many competing ways of imagining Jesus, creation, salvation, and the God of Israel were circulating before Nicene Christianity had the power to define orthodoxy and suppress rivals.
Gnosticism also helps expose how messy the category itself is. Episodes tied to this topic return not only to classic features like dualism, secret knowledge, and hostile readings of the material world, but also to the methodological problem that most evidence comes from opponents, later discoveries like Nag Hammadi, and traditions that do not line up neatly enough to yield a single timeless definition.

“The material world, not material wealth, but the entire material world is corrupt. And we are fundamentally spirits that are trying to escape from the fleshly prisons of the material world.”
“Anciently there's nobody who would have said, oh yeah, I'm a Gnostic. Right. That wasn't an identity that had any currency back then.”
“This is a group that is Gnostic, which means that they think that the creator God in Genesis is not a very nice entity. Right. This is not the ultimate source of all things good and evil. This is a lower entity that sort of takes this material world that comes about as a result of cosmic mishap essentially, and rules over it.”
